If you have a few spare hours and are looking for a rewarding hike with breathtaking views, Hochalm is a fantastic choice. Just don’t make the same mistake we did—there’s no actual hut at the top! Instead, you’ll find the ruins of an old hut, which make a perfect spot to catch a stunning sunrise. A little further up, the summit awaits, crowned with a cross and offering a spectacular view of the Isar River winding its way toward Munich.
There are several routes to reach Hochalm. We started at the Aschenpass parking lot and followed the trail toward the Mitterhütte. From there, it’s a short but steep climb to the ruins and the summit. For the descent, you can either retrace your steps or take an alternative route. If you head behind the Mitterhütte into the woods, you’ll follow a trail that leads to some lovely water spots—perfect for a refreshing break.
Another option is the southern route, starting at the Walchen parking area near the Sylvensteinspeicher. This alternative offers a different perspective of the area and is well worth exploring.
