Kampenwand 🇩🇪 | A Scenic Adventure in the Chiemgau Alps

The Kampenwand, nestled in the Chiemgau Alps, is one of the most popular peaks in the Bavarian Alps. Thanks to the Kampenwand cable car and panoramic trail, it’s an attractive destination even for non-mountaineers. However, its popularity means it can get quite busy, and many inexperienced hikers tackle the steep, rocky ascent from the Steinlingalm, making for a lively but challenging trail experience.

Starting from the parking lot in Aigen, forest paths and shaded trails lead to the charming Steinlingalm at 1,473 meters (about a 2-hour hike). This cozy mountain hut offers a great spot for a rest before the adventure intensifies. From here, the trail becomes noticeably steeper, culminating in a short, manageable scramble just before the summit. After approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes of hiking, you'll reach the eastern summit of the Kampenwand at 1,669 meters. The reward? A breathtaking panorama of the Bavarian foothills and the shimmering Chiemsee. At the summit, you’ll also find the tallest summit cross in the Bavarian Alps—a stunning 12-meter-high structure, occasionally lit by solar power on special evenings.

Timing can make all the difference on this hike. We managed to catch the last beautiful weekend of autumn when the cable car was still running. As expected, the trails were bustling, but we found our own little haven about 50 meters below the summit. There, in peaceful solitude, we soaked in the incredible views and enjoyed the serenity of the mountains.

DOG HIKEABILITY FACTOR: 4/10

The trail is easy-going up to the hut. However, beyond that point, the terrain becomes quite rocky, so your dog should be comfortable navigating uneven ground. It's a good idea to use a leash for added safety and control.
