Is there anything better than a cold mountain lake on a sunny summer day? Well, this one is challenging you with brutal coldness and the way up is no joke either.
Your journey starts at the Parkplatz Auf der Höh. This is a popular trail, so arrive early to snag a spot, or keep an eye out for signs—some locals even open their backyards for parking. From here, you can take a bus to the power plant where the real hike begins, or add an extra 2.5 km by walking there.
The trail leads past the Konstanzer Jägerhaus before you take a steep left into the woods after the power plant. This section is no joke—it's a tough climb through the forest. But as you ascend, the trees give way to an open plateau, offering a bit of a breather before the next challenge: scaling the stone wall ahead.
Once you conquer the final stretch, the Schrecksee reveals itself in all its glory. This pristine mountain lake, surrounded by rugged peaks, is the perfect spot to rest, soak in the views, and—if you’re brave enough—take a dip in its icy waters.
When you're ready to head back, you can retrace your steps or opt for a longer route, such as continuing on the Jubiläumsweg toward the Giebelhaus. Either way, Schrecksee is a hike that rewards every drop of sweat with unforgettable alpine magic.
DOG HIKEABILITY FACTOR: 9/10
Your dog needs to be in good shape for this long hike. While there aren’t any particularly challenging rocks, your dog should be comfortable walking on stony and gravel terrain.
